Autoplan

All motorists in BC must carry basic automobile insurance. The following additional coverage is available from ICBC.

Collision

Collision insurance pays to repair or replace your vehicle if it is damaged as a result of :

  • Upset or a collision with another vehicle
  • A person
  • An object including the ground or highway
  • Impact with an object on or in the ground

If your car is a total loss as a result of a crash, theft or other mishap, Collision insurance pays to repair your vehicle or provides you with a cash settlement. In the insurance industry, loss of or damage to your vehicle is known as "Own Damage" and obtaining insurance to cover it is optional. This type of insurance is certainly worth considering, however, given that in an average year, B.C. motorists are involved in more than 675 motor vehicle crashes each day and an average of 50 vehicles are reported stolen in BC each day.

Things to consider

  • Because Collision coverage deals specifically with Own Damage, the type of vehicle you drive will have an impact on the premium you pay, along with your claim record and where you live.
  • The minimum deductible for Collision coverage is $300. The lower your deductible, the higher your premium. The higher your deductible, the lower your premium.
  • If you have a history of at-fault crashes, you may not be able to buy collision insurance-or only be able to buy collision insurance with a high deductible.

Comprehensive

Comprehensive insurance covers loss or damage to your vehicle by any cause except those covered by Collision insurance.

For example, Comprehensive insurance covers vehicle damage or loss from:

  • Fire
  • Theft (except by an employee or member of your household)
  • Vandalism
  • Falling or flying objects, including rock or gravel damage to your windshield
  • Malicious mischief
  • Lightning
  • Windstorm
  • Earthquake
  • Hail
  • Impact with animals
  • Missiles
  • Riot
  • Civil commotion
  • Rising water

Things to consider

  • Because Comprehensive coverage deals specifically with vehicle damage, the type of vehicle you drive will have an impact on the premium you pay, along with where you live.
  • Claims made under your Comprehensive coverage do not affect your discount on ICBC's Claim-Rated Scale.
  • Except for windshield claims, the minimum deductible for Comprehensive coverage is $300. The lower your deductible, the higher your premium. The higher your deductible, the lower your premium.
  • If you have a history of Comprehensive claims, you may only be able to buy Comprehensive insurance with a high deductible.

Specified perils

All coverages provided by Specified Perils are also included under Comprehensive coverage. This form of insurance provides specific coverage only against:

  • Fire
  • Lightning
  • Theft (except by an employee or member of your household)
  • Windstorm
  • Earthquake
  • Hail
  • Explosion
  • Riot
  • Civil commotion
  • Falling or forced landing of an aircraft or portion of it
  • Rising water or stranding, sinking, burning, derailment or collision while the vehicle is being transported on land or water

Things to consider

  • Specified Perils coverage does not cover damage from vandalism, malicious mischief, falling objects such as rocks, or impact with an animal. You need Comprehensive coverage for protection against those risks.
  • All coverage provided by Specified Perils is included under Comprehensive coverage. You should choose only one of these policies.
  • Claims made against Specified Perils coverage do not affect your discount on ICBC's Claim-Rated Scale.
  • The deductible for Specified Perils coverage is $300

Vehicle in storage

If you're not using your vehicle or plan to store it for a while, you can buy Vehicle in Storage coverage.

Vehicle in Storage insurance can include most of the same coverages you can buy for a vehicle that is licensed and on the road:

  • Collision
  • Comprehensive
  • Specified perils
  • Third-party legal liability
  • Accident benefits
  • Extended third-party legal liability

Things to consider

  • Campers, whether attached to a vehicle or not, can only be insured using a storage policy.
  • This policy will not cover any vehicle or trailer that is used as living accommodation at any time while it is insured under the policy.

For more information, contact an Envision insurance representative.

Limited depreciation coverage

Do you have a newer vehicle? Limited Depreciation Coverage protects you from the impact of depreciation should you make a claim for damage to your vehicle under Collision, Comprehensive or Specified Perils insurance.

Things to consider

  • You can only buy Limited Depreciation Coverage if your vehicle is three model years old or newer.*
  • The vehicle can be new or used.

*Other restrictions may apply. Talk to your Envision insurance representative for more information.

Replacement cost coverage

New cars depreciate quickly. Sometimes when a newer car is a write-off, the settlement is for less than you expect because the car has depreciated in value. If you took out a loan to buy your vehicle, you may find that you get paid less than the amount you owe the bank.

If you have Replacement Cost Coverage, ICBC will give you a brand new vehicle (or the cash equivalent) to replace your old one if it is a total loss or write-off.

Things to consider

  • Replacement Cost Coverage can be purchased for any vehicle that is 3 model years old or less.
  • You don't have to be the first owner of the vehicle, as long as it is 3 model years old or less.

Collector and vintage vehicles

If your Collector Car becomes a total loss after a crash-or for some other reason-the last thing you want to worry about is having to negotiate the full value of your car. So why not guarantee the value of your investment upfront?

You and ICBC agree on the value of your vehicle BEFORE you purchase the policy. In the event of a total loss, you'll receive the entire amount listed on the policy-nothing less.

Things to consider

  • Your vehicle must qualify as a Collector Car and currently have ICBC collector status.*
  • Only drivers with 10 years or more of driving experience may drive the vehicle.
  • The vehicle must be kept in a fully enclosed or locked garage that can only be accessed by the insured and his/her household.

*Other restrictions may apply. Contact an Envision insurance representative for more information.

Extended third-party legal liability

If you are found at fault (that is, legally liable) for a crash where someone else is hurt or their property is damaged, your Third-Party Legal Liability coverage pays their claims or damages against you.

Your basic Autoplan gives you $200,000 in Third-Party Legal Liability coverage.

However, courts often award judgments for much more than $200,000 (especially in the United States). Many motorists increase their Third-Party Legal Liability coverage, so they are better protected in case of serious injury to others.

Things to consider

  • You can choose to increase your coverage to $300,000, to $5 million, or anywhere in between.

For more information, contact an Envision insurance representative.

Excess underinsured motorist protection

Basic Autoplan provides Underinsured Motorist Protection (UMP) of up to $1,000,000.

If you or your passengers are injured in a crash where the at-fault driver doesn't have enough insurance to cover your claim, UMP covers you and anyone else riding in your vehicle. It covers you no matter what vehicle you're riding in, and it covers members of your household riding in any vehicle except for ones they own.

UMP also covers you and members of your household if an underinsured motorist injures you when you're a pedestrian or a cyclist.

Things to consider

  • You can increase your UMP coverage to $2,000,000, for only $25 a year.

For more information, contact an Envision insurance representative.

Loss of use

A Loss of Use policy will cover the cost of other transportation while your car is being repaired after a claim. The replacement vehicle will be limited to one that is of a make and model specified by ICBC and similar in size to what you own.

Things to consider

  • Loss of Use will pay for you to rent a vehicle, hire a taxi or use public transportation (a daily maximum applies).
  • If your car is a total loss, it will cover your transportation from the time of the crash until you are paid out for your car, or until you reach the limit of your coverage, whichever happens first.
  • Loss of Use only applies to the coverage you have (i.e. if you only carry Collision coverage and your car is vandalized, Loss of Use will not apply).

For more information, contact an Envision insurance representative.

Vehicle travel protection

If you are involved in a crash or your vehicle is stolen while you are on a trip away from home (business or pleasure), Vehicle Travel Protection covers many of the extra costs you face.

Vehicle travel protection covers:

  • Extra living costs such as lodging, meals, telephone and transportation, up to a total of $500 or $1000 depending on the number of people insured
  • Replacement vehicle costs up to $500
  • Towing costs up to $100
  • Travel expenses for the insured to return home, up to $1,500 or $3,000 depending on the number of people insured
  • Up to $750 to return the damaged or recovered stolen vehicle back home
  • If you are involved in a crash with a vehicle that is at fault but not insured by ICBC, you will be reimbursed for the Collision deductible you pay.
