Langley students "Voom" into action with in-school credit union

Langley, B.C.—The grades 4-7 class at Langley Montessori School (LMS) recently kicked off its third year of financial fun with Voom, a hands-on model credit union designed to teach children about wise money management and teamwork.

Made possible through a partnership with staff of the Langley City Envision Financial branch, Voom allows the students to play various real life roles as they run their own in-school credit union—they serve as tellers, greeters, cash desk workers, treasurers, managers, and even CEOs. Envision’s staff offers coaching and support to the students participating in Voom.

To prepare for their duties as Voom’s “staff,” twenty LMS students visited the Envision Financial Administration Centre where they learned more about credit unions, banking, and saving money.

As the school year progresses, the class will also learn about corporate citizenship. The students themselves will be given the task of deciding how to spend $2000 donated to LMS from Envision.

Envision Financial, home of the popular Big Change™ savings account, is B.C.’s third-largest credit union with approximately $3.4 billion in assets under administration. Envision employees to swarm their local communities as volunteers

Langley, B.C.—During the week of October 22 nearly 100 employees from Fraser Valley-based credit union Envision Financial, including President and CEO Gord Huston, will be taking time away from their regular routine at credit union branches and offices to volunteer at various community service organizations across the Lower Mainland. Instead of banking, they’ll be painting, landscaping, gardening, entertaining, and cleaning at organizations like the Creative Centre Society in Abbotsford, Big Brothers Big Sisters in Chilliwack, Deltassist in Delta, and Harvest Box in Langley and Surrey—and what’s more, they’ll still be earning their usual workday’s wages from Envision.

It’s part of a new program at Envision called Days of Caring, says Janice Iverson, Envision Financial’s Assistant Vice-President, Corporate Citizenship.

“As part of our Employee Giving Campaign, which includes fund-raising for United Way and its agencies, we’ve introduced an additional way to give back to community—through volunteer time,” she says. “Days of Caring enables Envision’s employees to contribute to the community on a face-to-face, person-to-person level.”

“We want to facilitate and encourage our staff to volunteer in their communities because we believe there are many ways to keep our communities strong,” says Iverson. “Being supportive through time and effort is not only valuable, but it also exposes us to social issues being addressed by our community partners.”

Envision volunteers will be serving in the following locations:

  • Creative Centre Society (Abbotsford): Envision volunteers will be painting the hallways, rooms, and stairwell of the Creative Centre Society’s “Abby House.” Creative Centre Society provides rehabilitative services to consumers of mental health services with a focus on attaining life skills for functioning actively and independently in the community.

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters Upper Fraser Valley (Chilliwack): Envision volunteers will be painting the entrance, staff room, and activity room. Big Brothers Big Sisters Upper Fraser Valley provides opportunities for children and youth to develop their sense of belonging and potential through friendship and guidance of mentoring in Chilliwack, Agassiz/Kent, and Hope.

  • Deltassist Seniors Outreach Program (Delta): Envision volunteers will be painting the conference room, waiting room, and kitchen at the Deltassist Seniors Outreach Program facility. Deltassist provides programming and services connecting isolated seniors with the community around them.

  • Langley Seniors Resource Society (Langley): In the morning, Envision volunteers will be gardening, shrub clearing, and window cleaning at the facility which provides health, recreational, food, and outreach services to seniors. In the afternoon, the volunteers will take time to visit with the seniors, playing games and sharing stories.

  • Langley Community Services Society (Langley): Envision volunteers will be painting the entrance, hallways, conference room, and hallways of the LCSS building. LCSS provides counseling, support, and education to the community.

  • Harvest Box (Langley, Surrey): Envision volunteers will be sorting and distributing fresh fruit and vegetables in hampers that will go to local families.

“With the everyday demands of work and family life it’s often difficult for many people to find time to volunteer in the community,” adds Iverson. “Days of Caring offers the opportunity to volunteer during work-time, and get to know colleagues in a more casual setting.”

Envision Financial, home of Big Change™, is B.C.’s third-largest credit union with approximately $3.4 billion in assets under administration. Envision has a number of subsidiary businesses including Envision Insurance Services, Envision Investment Services, CUDealerLink, Envision Leasing, and inUnison Technology Services. Envision Financial's Barry Delaney to serve on national charity's board

Abbotsford, B.C.—Abbotsford local Barry Delaney has been elected to the Cooperative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF)’s newly-formed Board of Directors. Delaney, who currently serves as the Senior Vice-President, Planning at Envision Financial, will join eight credit union colleagues from across Canada to govern CDF as it seeks to raise $1.5 million of annual sustainable funding in the next three years for cooperative development programs around the world.

“This is an excellent opportunity to advance the credit union movement globally and help people lift themselves out of poverty,” says Delaney. “CDF enables credit unions in Canada to make a tangible, positive difference in developing countries every year by fostering the growth of credit unions and co-operatives internationally. I’m honoured to have been asked to join the CDF Board.”

CDF is the fundraising arm of the Canadian Cooperative Association (CCA), which strives to alleviate poverty and economically empower some of the world’s most impoverished people by creating sustainable credit unions and cooperatives in developing countries and small-scale cooperative ventures in Canada. CDF adopted a new governance structure—which includes a Board of Directors—in June of 2007.

Delaney is a strong supporter of international development and has worked with CCA in the past to help communities in developing countries break the cycle of poverty by establishing and running credit unions. On multiple occasions he has traveled on assignment to Africa, where he’s provided technical assistance to credit unions in Malawi and Ghana. Delaney also serves on the University College of the Fraser Valley Foundation Board and he chairs the Langley Homeless Shelter task force. He and his wife Ramona reside in Abbotsford with their children.

Mark McLoughlin kicks credit union partnership into high gear

Kelowna, B.C.—Former CFL star and B.C. Lion Mark McLoughlin has turned his attention from field goals to financial services, having recently been appointed Vice-President, Corporate Development at local credit union Envision Financial.

The 41-year-old kicker, who played 17 years in the CFL and holds the record for the second-highest career point total in league history, will be one of the key forces behind “Pathways,” a first-of-a-kind partnership initiated by B.C.-based Envision Financial and Alberta-based First Calgary Savings that unites credit unions from different provinces. The Pathways partnership enables credit unions to increase their operating efficiency, achieve economies of scale, and build greater financial strength, thereby enabling them to better serve their members-owners and win their local markets.

“We’re thrilled to have Mark leading the advance of our Pathways partnership,” says Envision Financial President and CEO Gord Huston. “With experience in the worlds of both business and professional sports, Mark is a seasoned leader who shares our commitment to teamwork and success.”

In his new role, McLoughlin will be sharing the Pathways vision with other prospective credit union partners, developing Envision’s business in the Okanagan Valley, and pursuing additional opportunities to facilitate credit union partnerships across borders.

McLoughlin is no stranger to the credit union industry, having served on First Calgary Savings’ Board of Directors since 2000 and as Board Chair from 2003 to 2007. Most recently, McLoughlin was Vice-President of Advancement at Olds College, and he was previously the Vice-President of External Relations at Alliance University College. McLoughlin also has experience as the President of the Calgary Stampeders organization, a role he held briefly in 2004 before deciding to extend his playing career by another year.

As a professional football player, McLoughlin is well known for his achievements both on and off the field. His star-studded career boasts three Grey Cups in 1992, 1998, and 2001, and eight Western Division Scoring Crowns. A six-time Western Division All-Star and four-time CFL All-Star, McLoughlin is also a two-time recipient of the CFL’s Tom Pate Man of the Year award in 1995 and 1997 for his commitment on the football field and in the community.

His contributions to the community include helping establish Calgary’s Stay-In-School initiatives, developing a community partnership model to ensure equitable educational opportunities for students, and serving as the Partnership Director for the Calgary Education Partnership Foundation, among other charitable involvements.

McLoughlin and his family relocated to Kelowna earlier this year.

McLoughlin jokes that he’s in the perfect position to foster the Pathways partnership between First Calgary Savings and B.C.’s Envision Financial, having played for both the Calgary Stampeders and, most recently in 2005, the B.C. Lions.

“With Pathways, there’s true potential to build a regional network of credit unions across provincial boundaries,” he says. “I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”

Envision Financial, home of Big Change, is B.C.’s third-largest credit union with approximately $3.4 billion in assets under administration. Canadians don't care about spare change, survey says—but perhaps they should

Vancouver, B.C.—A recent TNS Canadian Facts survey commissioned by B.C.-based credit union Envision Financial suggests that more than half of online Canadians don’t care two cents about any currency smaller than a $5.00 bill.

According to the poll, 77 percent of online Canadians mentally round up to the nearest dollar when making purchases—for example, spending $49.13 is essentially the same as spending $50.00 in most people’s minds. And when payments are made with cold hard cash as opposed to debit and credit cards, 57 percent of online Canadians mentally round to the nearest $5.00.

“It’s an interesting psychological phenomenon,” says Bev Brown, Envision Financial’s Senior Vice-President, Sales and Service. “Canadians don’t seem to value smaller sums of money.”

The same survey also asked online Canadians to identify their biggest impediments to saving money. Interestingly enough, more than half of respondents said they simply didn’t have enough money to build savings.

“The results of the survey caught our attention,” says Brown. “Many Canadians are saying they don’t care about money at the dollars-and-cents level, but at the same time they’re reporting that they don’t have enough money to save. We analyzed the situation and said, ‘What if we could help people overcome their money-saving barrier by putting their spare change to work for them?’”

Envision’s answer to the problem, she says, is Big Change™, a new optional banking feature that automatically rounds up the “extra” cents on every debit purchase and then moves them from the purchaser’s chequing account into a separate high-interest savings account.

“It’s a very simple concept,” explains Brown. “If you spend $3.25 on a cup of coffee, for example, Big Change™ rounds the purchase to $4.00 and moves the extra $0.75 into a savings account that earns higher interest for you and holds your money in place where you’re less likely to spend it.”

According to the survey, 82 percent of online Canadians are more likely to spend their money if it’s in a chequing account as opposed to a savings account. The majority of online Canadians also said they felt they were closer to reaching their savings goals when their excess money was deposited to a savings account as opposed to sitting in their chequing account or as cash in their wallet.

“Small amounts of money can accumulate much more quickly than most people anticipate,” says Brown. “Big Change™ takes the nickels and dimes that might otherwise go unnoticed and maximizes them. It enables people to add to their savings in an easy and convenient manner that can produce impressive long-term results.”

“We’re also exploring options for enabling people to give their Big Change™ savings money to directly charity,” she says.

The TNS survey mentioned in this article was conducted in Aug 2007, using TNS’ Express Online Omnibus. A total of 1084 online Canadians (18 years of age and higher) completed this survey. Interviews were disproportionately distributed across British Columbia, the Prairies, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. Survey responses were weighted to reflect the Canadian online population.

Envision donates $185,000 to new Abbotsford hospital

Gift will help BC Cancer Agency support children living with cancer in their families at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre

Abbotsford, B.C.—Local credit union Envision Financial has donated $185,000 through the Envision Charitable Foundation to A Campaign for Health Care Excellence, a partnership of the BC Cancer Foundation and the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation. The Campaign is raising funds to support the new Abbotsford Regional Hospital & Cancer Centre.

“Envision is deeply rooted in Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley, and we know that the new hospital and cancer centre will greatly benefit members of these communities,” says Gord Huston, Envision Financial’s President and CEO. “We’re excited to have this opportunity to support such an important project.”

In recognition of Envision being named one of the 50 Best Employers in Canada for the fifth straight year, employees were awarded with a $35,000 gift, to donate to a cause or charity of their choice. In addition to the $150,000 that will be coming from the Envision Charitable Foundation, our employees have selected to direct the $35,000 gift to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre.

“The mission of the Envision Charitable Foundation is to support initiatives that enhance the quality of life in our communities,” explains Sally O’Sullivan, Chair of the Envision Charitable Foundation. “The new Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre will result in better healthcare for the residents of Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley.”

The BC Cancer Agency’s department of patient & family counselling will use part of the donation to create more tools to support patients, families and caregivers, a need that was highlighted in recent patient feedback surveys. For example, a workbook entitled ‘Time for Me’ has been developed for children living with cancer in their families. The workbook will provide an interactive forum for children to learn about cancer, how it is treated, and how a child and his/her family can be impacted by a cancer diagnosis. Envision’s donation will enable the BC Cancer Agency to make the workbook accessible on the internet, to benefit those families who are unable to visit a cancer centre due to health, geographical distance, work commitment and other reasons.

“Children learn coping or problem-solving skills through interactive activities as well as communication skills to express their thoughts and concerns. This really helps kids whose parents or other family members have cancer. We have found the workbook to be a great tool,” says Gina MacKenzie, practice leader for the Patient and Family Counselling department at the BC Cancer Agency's Lower Mainland sites.

Health care professionals working with families in the field of oncology will also benefit from the workbook being available online. The website and accompanying materials will be modelled after other successful websites in North America; children and their families will be asked to provide input and pilot test ideas throughout the development process.

A Campaign for Health Care Excellence is a partnership between the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation and the B.C. Cancer Foundation to raise $7.5 million for enhancements to technology and cancer programs at the new Abbotsford Regional Hospital & Cancer Centre. Established in 2000, the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation is committed to building partnerships with individuals, community organizations and businesses to support the hospitals and health care services within the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District.

Established in 1935, the B.C. Cancer Foundation raises funds to support research and enhancements to care at the B.C. Cancer Agency, throughout B.C.

The Envision Charitable Foundation was created in 1996 with the intent of establishing and growing a valuable local resource in perpetuity. Since inception, the Envision Charitable Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in grants to a variety of initiatives throughout BC. Envision Financial, home of the Redfrog mortgage, is B.C.’s third-largest credit union with approximately $3.4 billion in assets under administration. For five years running, Envision has been named one of the 50 Best Employers in Canada.  Envision is designated a Caring Company by Imagine Canada, and invested more than $1.5 million in community organizations and initiatives in 2006.

Exemplary citizen and Envision employee celebrates remarkable 50-year career in banking

Tochi Sandhu, a model citizen, international field hockey star, and part-time Olympic official celebrates a 50-year journey in banking that brought him from Africa to British Columbia

Surrey, B.C.—In fifty years of work, Surrey resident Tarlochan “Tochi” Sandhu has never taken a single sick day. But that’s just an icing-on-the-cake achievement for a man whose extraordinary career includes multiple appearances at the Olympics, an encounter with Mother Theresa, a spotless lending record that’s the envy of the banking industry, and more awards than will fit inside his modest Scott Road office where, at age 67, he still administers commercial loans and warm smiles.

This year marks Tochi’s golden anniversary in banking. Though he’s humble about his accomplishments, he’s a well-known individual who has made many important contributions to the credit union movement in British Columbia and has helped economically strengthen communities throughout the Lower Mainland, particularly Delta and Surrey.

“All my life I’ve been able to help people through banking,” says Tochi. “I’m rewarded every day as I watch my members rise and grow and become more successful. I’ve never had a single write-off in my life and no bad debts. I feel very blessed.”

Tochi’s career has taken him on quite a journey—from being an African field-hockey star to the top commercial lender at B.C.’s third-largest credit union, Envision Financial.

Tochi was born in Dar Es Salaam, the capital city of Tanzania, Africa, to parents of Indian descent. His father, an accountant, sent him to India to study economics at age 17, but Tochi’s entrance into the banking world came through a more unlikely channel—a field hockey match.

While playing top-level competitive field hockey in Tanzania on his summer study break, Tochi netted a hat-trick against a team from Barclays Bank. The next day, one of the Barclays Bank managers approached Tochi’s father.

“He said to my father, ‘We want that boy working for us,’” explains Tochi with a laugh. “So I began working for Barclays over the summer holidays and began learning as much as I could.”

At Barclays, Tochi quickly learned that he loved banking.

“I think banking is in my blood,” he jokes. “As young banker I was taught to lend money as though it were from my own pocket. Today at Envision Credit Union it’s still the same—banking should be a person-to-person, family-type experience.”

Fortunately for his field hockey teammates, Tochi’s employer enabled him to combine his newfound passion for banking with his sporting pursuits, and as a young man he captained Tanzania’s national field hockey team. Later he became coach of the team and represented Tanzania at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. Tochi returned to the world stage as a team official at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and again at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. He was also a member of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Finance Committee and attended the Games at Edmonton in 1978 and Edinburgh, Scotland in 1986. Tochi served for many years as the Treasurer for both the Tanzania Olympic Committee and the African Hockey Federation as well.

“I don’t play field hockey anymore,” says Tochi, “But I’m still a very keen sportsman. I’m a big fan of the Vancouver Canucks and the B.C. Lions.”

One of Tochi’s favourite memories as a banker in Tanzania was the visit he received from Mother Theresa. “She walked into my branch to cash a donation for the Missionaries of Charity’s orphanage in Dar Es Salaam,” Tochi explains, pointing to a lone photograph on the wall of his office depicting the encounter. “In Indian tradition, I bowed and welcomed her—she put her hand on my head and blessed me.”

“I was chairman of the Lions club at that time and we would go serve meals at the orphanage in Dar Es Salaam every Wednesday,” he says. “We also served meals at the leprosy centre and Mother Theresa wanted to come with us. I remember that she was hugging all the people with leprosy and she wasn’t scared at all.”

In 1988, Tochi and his family immigrated to Canada. Because he speaks five languages, including English, Tochi quickly settled into life in his new country. By 1990, he had accepted the position of the CEO of Khalsa Credit Union, and under his leadership, the small financial institution experienced substantial growth.

Although he retired from his role at Khalsa in 2000, Tochi’s love for banking was irrepressible, and by 2001 he had joined the team of commercial lenders at Envision Credit Union.

To date, Tochi has won Envision’s “Top Commercial Lender Award” for six consecutive years. With seemingly boundless enthusiasm, he’s showing no signs of letting up in future years.

“I love Envision and I wish I’d joined even earlier,” he says. “The values of the organization are excellent and the management has developed a culture where we’re all committed to teamwork. It gives me great pride to be part of an institution that really flourishes and gives back to the community, and I think people are proud to bank here too. We’ve got the best service, and the people and the skills needed to help small and medium-sized enterprises really advance their business.”

“Tochi’s contributions to the credit union movement in B.C. and to the communities of Surrey and Delta are truly phenomenal,” says Steve Irving, Envision Financial’s Assistant Vice-President of Business Services. “He’s a real community-builder, and a true gentleman—every one who knows Tochi has deep admiration for him, and recognizes what he’s done for the community.”

When asked about what his future holds, Tochi exudes great optimism. “I have been very blessed,” he says with a smile. “I really enjoy banking and these fifty years have gone by quickly. By the grace of God, I’ll continue doing whatever good I can for others and banking will always be part of my life.”

Envision Financial and First Calgary Savings launch dealer-direct auto financing company in Ontario

London, ON—Two large western Canadian credit unions have made a bold foray eastward to facilitate the buying and selling of automobiles in Ontario. B.C.-based Envision Financial and Alberta-based First Calgary Savings have joined forces to launch inUnison Financial Services, a new Ontario-based dealer-direct vehicle financing company.

“Ontario is the biggest market for auto sales in Canada,” says inUnison CEO Tim Wasilieff, “but prior to inUnison Financial Services’ entrance into the market, the credit union system didn’t provide very many dealer-direct financing options for auto buyers and dealers.”

“We looked at the situation and recognized a tremendous opportunity for a strong and experienced credit union-based dealer-direct financing provider to step in and serve Ontario consumers,” he says.

inUnison Financial Services is backed by the success of Envision Financial’s CUDealerLink and First Calgary Savings’ Dealer Services, two credit union-based dealer-direct vehicle financing operations that have proven to be highly effective in western Canada.

According to Wasilieff, inUnison Financial Services will be a welcome arrival for Ontario’s car buyers, vehicle dealerships, and credit unions alike.

“inUnison will enable credit union members to borrow money directly from their credit union without leaving the premises of a vehicle dealership, if their credit union is an affiliate partner with inUnison,” he says. “And even if their credit union is not a partner with inUnison, vehicle-buyers can borrow directly from inUnison and choose to give their business to a company that they know is firmly rooted in credit union values.”

Wasilieff predicts that inUnison Financial Services will be especially attractive those who are who are already among Ontario’s 1.6 million loyal credit union members. However, he is quick to point out that inUnison is for anyone who needs vehicle financing.

Vehicle dealers, meanwhile, will appreciate having another dependable lender to direct their customers to for auto financing.

“The bottom line is that inUnison Financial Services will help vehicle dealers close more deals right on the auto lot, with financing provided by a well-established lender they can trust,” says Wasilieff.

Ontario credit unions also stand to gain with inUnison Financial Services. By becoming an affiliate partner with inUnison, credit unions can offer dealer direct financing services to their members, bypassing the costly procedure of setting up their own dealer direct vehicle financing outfit. According to Wasilieff, this partnership model has worked extremely well for credit unions throughout B.C. and Alberta, and is already proving successful in Ontario. inUnison’s first major affiliate partner credit union in Ontario is London-based Libro Financial Group.

“As an affiliate partner with inUnison we’re now able to offer our owners dealer-direct vehicle financing, and expand the range of services we provide,” says Libro’s Finance Manager Fred Blaak. “It’s a mutually beneficially relationship that adds value for our owners.”

Earlier this year, inUnison Financial Services announced that London resident Angela Ramsay will serve as the company’s Business Development Manager, and will be building inUnison’s business throughout Ontario.

Libro Financial Group is southwestern Ontario's full-service financial institution operated by a community of owners and open to everyone. With 48,000 owners and more than $1.3 billion in assets under administration, Libro delivers a full range of chequing, savings, investment, RRSP, insurance and loan products along with financial coaching and advice for consumers, and farm and business owners. Envision Financial and First Calgary Savings sponsor global credit union conference in Calgary featuring Stephen Lewis

Calgary, AB—It may not feature the pomp and glamour of an international spectacle like an Olympic Games or a G8 Summit, but the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU)’s Annual Conference is an event of worldwide significance—and this summer, Calgary will be its host.

On July 29, nearly 2,400 credit union leaders from as many as 60 different countries will descend on Calgary for four intense days of collaborative learning, networking, idea-sharing, planning and discussion about current issues in the credit union industry. While in Calgary they’ll tour local credit unions, seeking to gain new insights and contributing some ideas of their own.

“The 2007 WOCCU Conference is an important event for the city of Calgary and for cooperative financial institutions in our community,” says Dave Gregory, President and CEO of First Calgary Savings. “The credit union movement profoundly affects hundreds of thousands of people across the globe. This world class conference is a tremendous opportunity for us to showcase our dynamic city to the world.”

The WOCCU Conference will feature presentations, lectures, forums, branch tours, and events designed to empower credit union leaders to more effectively serve approximately 172 million credit union members worldwide.

“It’s fair to call the WOCCU Conference an event of global magnitude, especially when you take into consideration the number of people traveling here with the collective goal of advancing the credit union way,” notes Gregory.

As Calgary’s largest credit union, First Calgary Savings has been one of the conference’s leading partners. In addition to sending delegates to the conference from among its own staff as both attendees and speakers, the local credit union has teamed up with its B.C.-based partner credit union Envision Financial to sponsor a special keynote presentation featuring Canadian icon Stephen Lewis, the former politician, diplomat, broadcaster, and United Nations special envoy for AIDS/HIV in Africa. Lewis is to deliver a talk entitled “Time to Deliver: Winning the Battle Against Poverty.”

“Credit unions and cooperatives are built on the simple concept of people helping people and I believe Stephen Lewis’ message will resonate with credit union leaders,” says Gregory. “It’s an honour to be able to bring someone of his calibre to the conference.”

In conjunction with the upcoming WOCCU Conference, First Calgary Savings has also jumped on board with the Canadian Cooperative Association (CCA)’s Women’s Mentoring Program to host one of 14 visiting credit union leaders from developing countries around the world. As part of this program, Rosalie Valencia, a credit union manager from Valenzuela, Philippines, will join First Calgary employees for a two-week work-and-learn stint culminating in a trip to the WOCCU Conference.

“It’s a privilege for us to be able to host international guests like Rosalie,” says Janice Iverson, Assistant Vice-President, Corporate Citizenship at First Calgary Savings and Envision Financial. “Opportunities like this wouldn’t exist for many women in developing countries without the support of the global credit union community.”

The WOCCU Conference’s sponsors will also include Credit Union Central of Canada, Credit Union Central of Alberta, Open Solutions, CUNA Mutual Group, The Co-op Network, National Credit Union Foundation, Servus Credit Union, 1st Financial Builiding Corporation of Canada, Servus Credit Union, Envision Financial, CUSC, Credit Union 24 Hours, PSCU Financial Services, and Concentra Financial.

A lifesaving grant: Envision provides needed funding for CPR training for high school students in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Central Okanagan

High school students in British Columbia learn many things in the classroom and soon, CPR will be one of them. Thanks to a grant of nearly $52,000 from the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation, students at secondary schools in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and the Central Okanagan will soon learn how to intervene in emergency situations and save lives.

This new high school CPR program is a joint initiative of the Advanced Coronary Treatment (ACT) Foundation, the B.C. Ambulance Service (BCAS) and the Ambulance Paramedics of B.C. (APBC).

“The ACT Foundation has already set up the CPR program in more than 900 schools across Canada,” explains Sally O’Sullivan, chair of the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation. “This grant will enable them to expand the program within B.C. so that more students can be trained in this life-saving skill. The goal is to see every B.C. high school student graduate with the skills and knowledge they need to save lives.”

“Eight in 10 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur at home and citizen response is available in only 15% of cases,” says ACT Foundation Executive Director Sandra Clarke. “Research indicates that survival rates can be almost four times higher with citizen CPR. High school CPR will prepare all youth to assist whatever the situation—whether it’s a parent or grandparent experiencing a heart attack or stroke, a sibling or child choking, or even a friend in a drowning emergency.”

Each student who participates in the high school CPR program will not only be trained to recognize developing medical emergencies, they’ll also learn how to take charge and provide emergency first aid care until the ambulance paramedics arrive.

“As an organization, the B.C. Ambulance Service has been making dramatic advances in terms of pairing new technology with experienced paramedics who’ve been trained to provide rapid response for cardiac patients,” says BCAS Vice President, Medical Programs, Dr. Jim Christenson. “However, despite the technology, medical expertise and the rapid deployment of first responders, the best chance for someone in cardiac arrest is still to have a bystander perform CPR until our paramedics can get there.”

The high school CPR program is unique in that it trains teachers to provide CPR training to students as an ongoing part of the curriculum. Corporate partners like Envision help cover the cost of mannequins and other start up resources, but once established, the program requires relatively little financial support.

“This is a very exciting project that will result in an unprecedented number of newly-trained CPR providers each year,” says Gord Huston, President and CEO of Envision Financial. “As a company, we provide funds to our Foundation each year with the hope that we can have a positive impact on the communities we serve. This program more than meets that objective.”

High schools in Coquitlam, Langley, Hope and Kitimat are already receiving the program this 2006-2007 school year thanks to the Envision Foundation. With the $52,000 donation, the upcoming school year will see high schools in the Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Central Okanagan school districts receive the program. Each year the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation selects one major project to support, in addition to several smaller initiatives. Projects are chosen based on a variety of criteria, but preference is given to initiatives focusing on two key areas: health and safety, and youth. The high school CPR program addresses both.

Since its inception in 1996, the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation has awarded nearly $1 million to more than 35 community organizations and groups across the province, including Big Brothers Big Sisters Upper Fraser Valley, Boys and Girls Clubs of B.C. and SOS Children’s Village B.C. among others.

Surrey students inspired by Envision-sponsored visit from children's author

Surrey, B.C.—Grade two and thee students at Strawberry Hills Elementary School got a chance to meet the creator of some of their favourite books last week when children’s author, Carol McTavish, dropped by the school. Sponsored by Envision Financial in partnership with the Surrey School District, McTavish’s visit was organized with one purpose in mind: to get students excited about reading and writing.

“Who here is an author?” McTavish asked students at the beginning of her presentation. When few kids raised their hands, McTavish quickly set the record straight. “All of you should have your hands up because you all write stories,” she explained.

“I like to tell kids that they can be an author too,” says McTavish, who wrote her first book, In the Path of Great Bear, with friend Lori Nunn in 2001. A teacher by profession, McTavish spent more than 30 years in the classroom before deciding to write children’s books. But like many writers, McTavish found it tough to break into the market.

“I sent my story to a publisher and they said it wasn’t very good,” she told students. “So I sent it to another publisher and they said the same thing. But we didn’t give up—we kept trying.”

In the end, McTavish and Nunn decided to pursue self publishing. It was a risky decision, but one that paid off. The pair has since sold thousands of copies of their book across Canada, and even gone on to publish two more titles: Magic in the Mountains (2002) and Where Wolves are Wild (2003).

Each book is inspired from McTavish and Nunn’s own experiences in the mountains and is designed to help teach kids about how to be safe in the mountain environment.

“I love that I get to teach kids about writing and nature,” she says.

During her presentation, McTavish shared about her writing process, her essential writing tools, and about how she gets her ideas. She also shared her top two pieces of advice: write about what you know and never use the word ‘nice.’

“The kids think it’s pretty neat to meet a real author, and it inspires them,” says McTavish.

Mary Tisdell, librarian at Bayridge Elementary in South Surrey, couldn’t agree more. She’s been involved with the Envision Visiting Authors Program in Surrey for several years now and has seen first-hand the impact it has on students.

“The Visiting Authors Program is a great way to get kids interested in not only reading, but writing and drawing,” she explains. “Having someone like Carol come in inspires the children to take their own creative talent seriously.”

McTavish, herself a part-time White Rock resident, also made presentations at Kirkbride Elementary, Cloverdale Traditional Elementary and Beaver Creek Elementary schools. All tolled, Envision will contribute $10,000 to the Visiting Authors Program in the Surrey School District this year. The sponsorship includes providing multiple copies of each visiting author’s books and accompanying teacher resources.

Flood money: Envision urges Fraser Valley residents to get financially prepared for high water

Bev Brown, Senior Vice-President, Sales and Service at Envision Financial, offers practical advice on how to prepare financially for a possible flood.

With a flood threat looming, financial advisors are encouraging residents of Hope, Chilliwack, Mission, Abbotsford, and Fort Langley to ensure they’re prepared not only for physical necessities, but also for financial necessities.

“Financial readiness for a flood situation can mean the difference between quick recovery and drawn out financial stress during and after a flood,” says financial expert Bev Brown, Senior Vice-President, Sales and Service, at Fraser Valley-based credit union Envision Financial.

Brown says there are three things every resident living in an at-risk area should do to get ready financially for a possible flood. First, it’s important to set aside or acquire some emergency funds before flooding occurs, to cover basic necessities like food and shelter in the event of a flood.

“You’ll want to ensure that you have money available in your account, or access to funds through different means such as a line of credit,” she says. “Paying down credit card debt today is advisable. At Envision, we’re ready to offer emergency loans and lines of credit to our member-owners before a flood, so they have some money to fall back on for necessities.”

Brown is quick to point out that people need not worry about being able to retrieve the money in their accounts in the event of a flood. “Withdrawing large amounts of emergency cash for your wallet isn’t necessary, and could even be unsafe,” she says. “With the extensive ABM network across the province today, getting at your money is easy, even if your bank or credit union branch building is inaccessible due to flooding.”

Secondly, Brown says residents in at-risk areas should plan a strategy for making or even deferring any loan payments or mortgage payments in the event of a flood.

“If a flood disrupts your normal work activities for weeks or even months, you’ll want to have a plan to take care of loan or mortgage payments,” she says. “For example, Envision’s member-owners can request to have up to three months of mortgage payments waived if their homes are flooded.”

Thirdly, Brown advises residents in at-risk areas to review their options and make a tentative game plan to pay for any rebuilding expenses they might be faced with after a flood.

“You’ll want to know in advance how to go about handling any post-flood recovery expenses, and how to access the provincial Disaster Financial Assistance program at www.pep.bc.ca,” she says. “If flooding is severe, Envision will work with Emergency Management B.C. to help member-owners replace or restore things that are essential to their homes or livelihood.”

“We’re even exploring the opportunity to set up a mobile or temporary credit union service centre in certain areas if flooding is severe enough to warrant the temporary closure of some of our local branch locations,” says Brown. “That way, our member-owners can have their banking needs met even in extreme flood conditions.”

Business owners can take additional measures to prepare, says Brown. In addition to following the three steps, business owners should develop contingency plans that outline how major business assets will be protected, how the business will operate in or survive flooding that creates a major disruption to normal business activities, and how the business will retain its key human resources in the event that the business cannot operate for a month or more.

“Business owners should also familiarize themselves with the Disaster Financial Assistance program,” she says, “so that their businesses can recover as quickly as possible from any flood damage and re-open promptly.”

“Many people are also asking questions about flood insurance,” adds Brown. “Unfortunately flood insurance for homes does not exist in B.C., nor does it exist in most of Canada. At this time the insurance companies have notified us that they will not sell commercial flood insurance either. That’s another good reason to be as financially prepared as possible.”

Brown also encourages Fraser Valley residents in at-risk areas to acquaint themselves with the Provincial Government’s Canadian Red Cross free flood information line, at 1-888-350-6070.

"Green" Envision Financial credit union branch coming to Newton

Surrey, B.C.—British Columbia’s third-largest credit union has just unveiled plans to set up shop in Surrey’s Newton area. Envision Financial, headquartered in Langley near the Surrey border, recently announced that it will build a credit union branch in the new retail centre being constructed at King George Highway and 73rd Avenue.

“We’re looking forward to better serving the community in Newton and to helping member-owners build healthy financial futures,” says Envision Financial President and CEO Gord Huston. “I’m confident that our new branch in Newton will be a huge success and will benefit Surrey residents.”

The new Envision branch building’s interior will utilize recycled materials and will employ “green” technologies designed to minimize energy consumption and water usage. Low-wattage electrical fixtures, Energy Star appliances, low-flush toilets, low-emissions paints, and carpeting and furniture made from recycled products are to be some of the building’s eco-friendly features. Envision is also in the process of purchasing Power Smart Green Power Certificates from B.C. Hydro to cover the branch’s energy requirements.

“For several years now we’ve been trying to show leadership as an organization by putting environmentally responsible standards in place,” says Huston. “We’re looking for every possible opportunity to go green. It’s our aim to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications for our Newton branch’s interior.”

The Newton branch isn’t Envision’s first environmentally responsible building. In 2005, Envision became the first financial institution in Canada to earn LEED Certified status from the Green Building Council, with its Willoughby branch in Langley. Envision has applied for LEED recognition with its Chilliwack City and Vintage Hills branch buildings as well.

Huston says the Newton branch will complement existing Envision locations in South Surrey, Fleetwood, and North Delta. Envision already employs more than 200 Surrey residents.

“We have thousands of member-owners in Surrey who have wanted us to open another location in their area,” adds Huston. “They know Envision provides exceptional levels of service and they’re looking forward to the increased accessibility that an additional branch will provide.”

Construction is expected to begin in fall 2007, and Envision anticipates that the branch will be open for business in early 2008. The Newton branch will be Envision’s twenty-first branch in British Columbia.

Envision Financial donation enables author to visit Mission schools, inspiring kids to read and write

Mission, B.C.—Ask most kids what they want to be when they grow up and you’ll probably hear answers like “doctor,” “firefighter” or even “astronaut.” But thanks to a new literacy program sponsored by Envision Financial, “author” is becoming a common answer as well.

From May 15th to 17th children’s author David Ward visited the Mission School District to interact with students as part of the Authors in Schools program.

Ward, who also gave presentations about his craft to every grade six and seven class in the district this past January, is the author of four children’s books including the Mask trilogy and The Hockey Tree. His fifth book, Archipelago, is currently in production.

“When children meet real authors, hear them read their writing and speak with them about their work, books take on a new meaning,” explains Melinda Dempster, Literacy Support Teacher for the Mission School District. “Books are no longer viewed as things that belong just in schools; they become connected to the real world. When children make this connection, they find literacy activities more engaging.”

During his first presentation, Ward regaled students with snippets from some of his favourite books and then led students in a series of fun writing exercises. He also shared tricks for breaking out of writer’s block.

“It can be intimidating staring at a blank page,” he told students. “We write a letter or a nonsense sentence to build our confidence.”

Ward also inspired his audience with anecdotes from his own writing experience.

“People told me I was a terrible speller so I stopped writing for a while,” he shared. “I still struggle with it, but it’s part of the process that good writers never give up. Just because you have trouble with spelling doesn’t mean you don’t have absolutely incredible ideas.”

During this second session, Ward will be leading student/author roundtable sessions and sharing more insights about the writing and editing process. He’ll also be providing personalized feedback to a number of students from each class.

“Envision has sponsored author visits in other districts but this one is unique in that it gives the students a chance to interact with the author while practicing their writing skills and then get comments back on their writing,” says Lois Wilkinson, Board Member at Envision. “The students have been submitting work to David since February and he’s been responding to them and helping them fine tune their work.”

“It’s funny because teachers can tell students things, but it’s inspiring to hear it from a real writer,” says Ward.

In addition to getting students excited about writing, Ward also gave Mission parents some pointers on how to engage their children in reading during a special parent literacy session at Windebank Elementary. Currently pursuing his doctorate at the University of British Columbia, Ward has spent the last several years doing research on children’s literature and reluctant readers—knowledge he’s more than happy to put into action.

“One of the best ways to engage reluctant readers is to get them hooked on writers,” he told parents. “Sometimes it takes having the book in front of them and with some, it takes having the books read to them aloud. There are all kinds of studies that show how children who have books read to them become readers themselves. The research demonstrates a strong connection between reading and writing.”

Envision has committed a total of $30,000 to the Authors in Schools program in Mission over the next three years. The funds will also provide multiple copies of each visiting author’s books and accompanying teacher resources. In 2008, the program will target children in grades three to five, and in 2009, children in kindergarten to grade two will benefit.

Envision Financial lowers mortgage requirement, makes homebuying easier

Langley, B.C.—The federal government’s recent amendment to Canada’s Bank Act has prompted locally-based credit union Envision Financial to implement a new mortgage guideline that will make homebuying more affordable for British Columbians. With the minimum down payment required to purchase a home without mortgage insurance lowered from 25 per cent to 20 per cent at Envision, homebuyers stand to save thousands of dollars on mortgage insurance and get into their new homes more quickly.

“This is going to greatly benefit our member-owners, especially young families and first-time homebuyers,” says Bev Brown, Envision Financial’s Senior Vice-President, Sales and Service. “Envision is proud to be able to take the lead among B.C.’s credit unions in making this new standard available on all our mortgages.”

“With housing prices still soaring in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, buying a home can be extremely challenging, especially when the associated costs like mortgage insurance are factored in,” says Brown. “Lowering the down payment requirement puts money back into many member-owners’ hands and enables them to get into their homes much sooner than they’d previously have been able to. It makes homebuying more achievable.”

According to Brown, based on a home price of $400,000, a homebuyer with a 20 per cent down payment now stands to save somewhere in the neighbourhood of $4000 on mortgage insurance costs.

Local School District to gain $30,000 at partnership signing with Envision Financial

Maple Ridge, B.C.—Schools in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are planning to expand programs aimed at helping at-risk youth stay in school, thanks to a new $30,000 partnership with local credit union Envision Financial. The partnership will enable the School District to build on its special Outdoor Education, Fine Arts, and “Trowel Trade” programs for students in grades 8 through 12.

At a signing event on Wednesday, May 9 at 6:00 p.m., School District 42 Superintendent John Simpson will be joined by Envision Financial’s President and CEO Gord Huston and Board Chair Terry Enns to solidify the partnership agreement.

“These three educational programs are designed to catch the attention of kids who might otherwise drop out of school, and get them interested in learning again,” says Huston. “At Envision, our desire is to build strong, healthy communities in British Columbia, so it’s an honour to be able to contribute in this way.”

According to Huston, Envision will provide the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District with $10,000 per year for three years, starting in 2007, to help build the programs.

The Outdoor Education Program, run through Westview Secondary School, integrates science and physical education as students plan and participate in outdoor activities like hiking and overnight camping. The Fine Arts program, which operates through Garibaldi Secondary School, helps students develop literacy, technology and self-expression skills through drama and other art forms. The Trowel Trades program, which draws students from the entire district, teaches valuable trade skills like masonry, bricklaying, and drywall installation.

The School District reports that the programs have already proven effective in engaging students at risk of dropping out and motivating them to stay in school. Now, because of the partnership with Envision Financial, the School District estimates that more than 60 students per year will benefit from participating in the three programs. The programs themselves will also improve as a result of this donation.

Small businesses look to benefit with Envision Financial’s new Unlimited Chequing for Business

British Columbia’s small businesses got an added boost today, with Envision Financial announcing the launch of its Unlimited Chequing for Business™ account. One of only two financial institutions in Canada to aggressively address the high account fees being charged to bank business customers, Envision is looking to bring meaningful value to the banking needs of BC’s business community.

Envision Financial’s Unlimited Chequing for Business account offers businesses unlimited deposits, withdrawals, payments, cheque clearing and more—all at the single, fixed low cost of $20 per month.

“This is a major breakthrough for small and mid-sized businesses across B.C.,” says Bev Brown, Envision Financial’s Senior Vice-President, Sales and Service. “We’re sending a clear message to businesses. We want them to bank with us, and we want to show them what it means to have a local, customer-focused credit union working together with them.”

“The banks are often charging upwards of a hundred dollars for some of their account packages, and then dinging business customers with things like deposit content fees on top of that,” says Brown. “We’ve chosen to go the opposite direction, with a chequing account for business that’s simple, transparent, and good for businesses.”

“Deposit content fees are a new category of fees that the banks have recently added to ding businesses,” explains Brown. “As a small business owner trying to balance your books each month, the last thing you want to be worrying about is getting hit with additional banking charges that can vary wildly from month to month.”

Envision’s Unlimited Chequing for Business account offers business members:

  • Unlimited deposits
  • Unlimited Envision Financial ABM transactions
  • Unlimited Exchange Network ABM transactions (more than 2,100 ABMs nationwide)
  • Unlimited Interac direct payments
  • Unlimited cheque clearing
  • Unlimited pre-authorized payments
  • Unlimited online and in-branch bill payments
  • Unlimited online and in-branch transfers
  • Unlimited in-branch withdrawals
  • Free monthly statements and cheque images

“We’re looking to build a full relationship with our business customers,” says Steve Irving, Assistant Vice-President, Business Services at Envision. “Envision’s Unlimited Chequing for Business account gives small and medium-sized businesses a compelling reason to leave their banks and experience Envision.”

“We're making banking easier for our business customers, so that they can focus on their businesses rather than trying to figure out their banking charges every month,” he says. “This account offers unparalleled simplicity and value.”

“For local businesses, doing all their banking with a locally-based, community-focused credit union makes good sense no matter you look at it,” says Irving. “At Envision, decisions are made right in their community by people who take the time to truly understand their business.”

According to Irving, Unlimited Chequing for Business is just one of a handful of business-specific products and services Envision has been busy introducing. Most recently, Envision introduced Business Online Banking (BOB). With BOB, Envision’s business members can do banking 24-hours a day, conveniently and securely. BOB enables business members to comprehensively monitor transaction activity, regulate access and audit controls, and manage bill payments, CRA payments, payroll transactions, fund transfers, wire transfers, account sweeping, cheque imaging, and more from any location with internet access.

Wesbank family gets major lift at Envision Financial grand opening

Westbank, B.C.—A number of Westbank locals recently won impressive prizes at the grand opening celebrations for Envision Financial’s new Vintage Hills branch. Though all prize-winners were thrilled to hear they’d won, none wore a bigger smile than Dave Hill, whose family benefited from the giveaway in a way he couldn’t have imagined.

Hill found himself at a loss for words when he learned he’d won a much-needed home computer system—the very thing he’d been seeking to help him kick-start his new business, 20/20 Home Inspections. Things d
