Westbank, B.C.—A Westbank credit union has been deemed an award-worthy masterpiece of green design by the Green Building Council of Canada and presented with an award acknowledging its environmentally-responsible design.
Envision Financial’s Vintage Hills branch at 201-3500 Carrington Road received Leadership In Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) “Silver” status in recognition of its eco-friendly structure and construction.
“The LEED certification is an honour for Envision and for the many Westbank and Kelowna residents who belong to our credit union,” says Julie Clitheroe, Branch Manager. “We’re very proud that Envision is leading the way in making environmental stewardship a priority.”
Constructed in 2007 to specific environmentally-friendly architectural specifications, the Vintage Hills building is loaded with green features.
Low-emission paints cover the walls and ceilings, significantly lessening the amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that would be outgassed by conventional paints. Energy-efficient light fixtures are used throughout the building. Low-flow faucets and dual-flush toilets are used in the restrooms to conserve water. And much of the furniture, carpeting, and upholstery contains post-product recycled materials.
Even the construction process itself followed rigorous environmental standards, says Clitheroe. When the building was constructed, the contractors separated out all the recyclable excess materials, thereby reducing the amount of scrap material going into landfill.
“Green buildings make sense economically too,” she says. “The extra costs associated with an environmentally-friendly building like this one are minimal and we’re able to save on electrical and water costs in the long run.”
Clitheroe says that an environmentally-responsible building also provides a better work environment for employees.
To offset the energy that the Vintage Hills branch uses, Envision has purchased Green Power Certificates from B.C. Hydro. In fact, the company is currently in the process of purchasing enough Green Power Certificates to offset the energy needs of its entire operation which includes 21 credit union branches across the province and a number of subsidiary businesses.
“Utilizing green power and constructing environmentally-friendly buildings are becoming more and more important to Envision as we seek out new ways to take better care of the planet,” says Gord Huston, Envision Financial President and CEO.
The Vintage Hills branch isn’t Envision’s first building to achieve LEED status. In 2005 Envision became the first financial institution in Canada to earn a LEED award when its Willoughby branch in Langley was recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council (the fledgling Canada Green Building Council did not have a Tenant Improvement LEED program at the time).
Likewise, Envision’s recently-built Chilliwack City branch achieved LEED status earlier this year. Envision branches in Maple Ridge and Surrey are currently under review by the Green Building Council and are expected to receive LEED certification as well.
“We’ve made a commitment to build all new Envision buildings to environmentally-friendly standards,” says Huston. “It’s the right thing to do.”

Langley, B.C.—Envision Financial announced that it has selected the Qtrade Financial Group as its new partner for comprehensive wealth management services. Both First Calgary Savings and Valley First have opted to go with Qtrade as well, marking a significant milestone in the partnership between the three credit unions.
Envision has enjoyed a long-term partnership with Qtrade Investor, Canada’s leading independent online brokerage, and now looks forward to extending the partnership to include Qtrade’s full wealth management services.
“We’re pleased to expand our partnership with Qtrade and we’re confident that their services will enable us to grow our wealth management business both today and in the future,” says Envision Financial President and CEO Gord Huston. “As our partner since 2000, Qtrade has proven that they are dedicated to delivering outstanding technology, products, support and customer service to Envision and to our member-owners.”
Scott Gibner, CEO of the Qtrade Financial Group, says, “We are proud that Envision has decided to deepen its partnership with Qtrade to grow their wealth management business. Envision is one of Canada’s largest credit unions and their partnership with First Calgary Savings and Valley First Credit Union holds tremendous potential.”
Huston says that Envision Financial plans to communicate directly with its member-owners about the change to Qtrade, and looks forward to continuing to provide customized wealth management solutions to help each member-owner reach his or her financial goals. He encouraged member-owners who have questions to contact Envision Financial or their local Envision branch representative.
Envision Financial is B.C.’s third-largest credit union with 21 branches and 19 insurance offices throughout the province. Abbotsford, B.C.—The “Partners for Freedom” capital campaign for Abbotsford’s only emergency shelter has received a sizeable shot-in-the-arm to the tune of $15,000.
The donation, made by the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation—the charitable arm of local credit union Envision Financial—will be used to offset the cost of The Salvation Army’s Centre of Hope shelter facility so that more energy and resources can be focused on serving the people in the region.
“The Salvation Army has a long track record in the Abbotsford area of helping people who experience challenges with the basic necessities of daily living,” says Sally O’Sullivan, Chair of the Envision Charitable Foundation. “We’re delighted to help bring them one step closer to completing their campaign.”
The $15,000 grant brings the Envision Charitable Foundation’s grand total of donations made to community organizations to $1.3 million since its inception in 1996.
At present, the Centre of Hope serves hundreds of families, individuals and seniors in the Abbotsford and Mission area. In addition to providing 18 emergency shelter beds, the facility is also home to a variety of meal and outreach programs, a parish nursing program, a drop in centre, and 14 supported independent living suites.
“We’re looking forward to completing the Partners for Freedom campaign, paying off our facility and having every donated dollar go directly to essential programming, aiding those who need it most,” says Deborah Lowell, Public Relations Director at the Centre of Hope. “We’re starting to see some exciting results in our community. We firmly believe that if we partner together, we can make a significant change in this community, one life at a time.”
Lowell is also quick to point out that there is still more to do.
“The Salvation Army provides one-third of the social services provided in the province of BC,” she explains. “As costs continue to rise and our community continues to grow, we see no end to the need of those struggling to get by.”
The Centre of Hope opened in October of 2005, greatly expanding The Salvation Army’s existing capacity in Abbotsford and Mission and centralizing its operations. To date, the Centre has seen great success, providing support and resources for those seeking freedom from a variety of issues including poverty, hunger, loneliness, drug addiction, homelessness and alcoholism.
The shelter features several sleeping rooms clustered around a comfortable common area. Up to 20 beds can be made available, depending on the need. The shelter also provides supper, breakfast, showers, and laundry. Many clients also access the counseling services and training programs offered by The Salvation Army.
The supportive housing units provide stable, affordable housing for men, allowing them to address issues, and move them towards greater independence.
In addition, the Meal Centre provides nutritious free lunches six days a week to anyone who is hungry. A professional cook and many volunteers contribute to this program, and local businesses donate much of the food.
The Salvation Army has had a presence in Abbotsford for the last 21 years caring for the poor, the homeless, the addicted, the lonely, the sick and the forgotten—helping them find a path to health and wholeness. For more information, visit careandshare.ca.

Langley, B.C.—Langley’s new “Gateway of Hope” Salvation Army homeless shelter is one step closer to reality thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation.
Expected to be completed by September 2009, the 5787 Langley Bypass location will provide 32,000 square feet of space to marginalized persons in the Langley community. The facility’s design incorporates a 30-bed emergency shelter for men and women, and 25 beds of supportive independent living for men and women. It will also include a daily meal centre expected to provide upwards of 95,000 meals per year.
“We’re extremely pleased to be involved with this project and can’t wait for the shelter to come to fruition,” says Sally O’Sullivan, Chair of the Envision Charitable Foundation.
“The Foundation exists because Envision has always believed in giving back to the communities it serves,” says O’Sullivan. “Envision’s Administration Centre is in Langley, and a number of Envision staff have taken a keen interest in the Gateway of Hope project.”
“At present, there is no emergency shelter in the Langleys,” explains Salvation Army Envoy Gary Johnson, “and yet we estimate there are approximately 150 homeless people in the region. The RCMP have over 95 names on their lists and there are many who are not known to police but come to our office for assistance on a regular basis.”
In particular, Johnson says The Salvation Army is seeing an increase in the number of seniors who are homeless, as well as women who are pregnant, addicted and homeless. Women fleeing abusive relationships are also expected to be significant users of the new shelter.
“Langley has had a Steering Committee on Homelessness since 1999 and has regarded homelessness as an issue that required attention through all these years,” says Johnson. “It’s very rewarding to see organizations like Envision get involved and support the vision.”
“The 25-bed supportive independent living units will be a second stage, safe environment for reintegration back into the community,” he explains. “And by serving nourishing meals in the daily meal centre, we expect to alleviate stressful situations for individuals who are marginalized and at risk of being homeless.”
Johnson says that in addition to the housing and meal programs, a variety of other services will operate from the new centre.
“Under the umbrella of the Community and Family Services operations, we will have a drop-in centre active during the day. This will be for those who are either guests of the shelter or for community members who are not homeless,” he says. “The goal will be to build relationships and assist people to enter a ‘continuum of care’ model of service to improve their situations.”
Other services will include educational and Masters-level counseling partnerships with Trinity Western University, Acts Seminary, Kwantlen University.
The Salvation Army was established in 1886 in BC and the Langley chapter has been operational since 1989. The Salvation Army is now the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in the country and is active in 400 communities across Canada and 111 countries around the world. Langley, B.C.—Envision Financial, First Calgary Savings and Penticton-based Valley First Credit Union announced today they have entered into discussions to partner with one another in developing a new, innovative financial services organization for western Canada.
Unlike a traditional merger, in which one or both parties lose their individual identities, the three credit unions are committed to creating a new business model that will see each of them retain its local identity, community focus and local decision-making while providing member-owners with the backing of a $7 billion financial services entity.
Envision Financial and Alberta-based First Calgary Savings have already achieved a high level of co-operation through the Pathways initiative. Since 2004, Pathways has seen the two credit unions develop a joint executive team, move to a common banking system provider and share several corporate services, including technology, marketing, communications, corporate citizenship and human resources.
“This is an amazing opportunity to be a part of something truly unique in the Canadian financial services industry,” says Envision Financial president and chief executive officer Gord Huston. “This partnership will generate improved financial performance resulting in stronger and more sustainable, locally-minded credit unions that are in a better position to better serve our member-owners and provide Canadians with a quality alternative to the banks.”
Together, the partnering credit unions would manage over $7.4 billion in assets, employ over 1,625 people and have a membership base of approximately 265,000. The partnership would serve its members from over 52 branches, 28 insurance offices, and 39 financial planning centres. With locations from Tsawwassen, BC, to the north in Kitimat, BC, and extending throughout the B.C. Interior and west to Calgary, AB, the new entity would be the largest inter-provincial credit union network in Canada.
“Our industry is changing rapidly and, as always, we are moving quickly to stay ahead of the curve to make sure we remain relevant, ensure greater economic diversification, and offer our members the kinds of products and services they want and need,” says Valley First president and chief executive officer Harley Biddlecombe. “Standing still is not an option for us; we believe that this initiative, which would allow us to retain our identity, continue to make decisions locally and achieve significant economies of scale and efficiencies, offers an attractive way forward.”
Work to make this vision a reality has already begun. Senior leaders from the three partnering credit union are now building a comprehensive business case that will be taken to the credit unions’ boards of directors for consideration in the early fall.
“This partnership holds tremendous potential for our organizations, as well as for our member-owners,” says First Calgary Savings president and chief executive officer Dave Gregory. “Our member-owners have been telling us that they value expanded service locations, but still want us to act locally and maintain our community focus. This partnership does just that.”

If this year’s AIME Achievement in Marketing Excellence (AIME) awards are any indication of success, Envision Financial’s unique “Pathways” partnership with Alberta-based credit union First Calgary Savings is more than paying off.
The credit unions’ shared marketing team took home an unprecedented seven AIME awards at this year’s Marketing Association for Credit Unions (MACU) conference—more than any other credit union.
The team’s work for First Calgary Savings received five awards at the AIME gala, including top honours in the Annual Reports and TV categories. The work for Envision Financial, meanwhile, netted two awards, including an AIME in the highly competitive Coordinated Campaigns category. Envision’s RRSP campaign exceeded its deposit growth goals and posted very strong double-digit growth results.
“I’m extremely proud of everyone on our joint marketing team, and how hard they’ve worked this past year,” says John Dundas, Senior Vice-President for Marketing and Communications at both credit unions. “While we develop creative to best speak to our markets and not with an eye as to whether or not it will win awards, it’s always nice to be recognized.”
Attracting entries from across Canada, the AIME Awards are held annually to showcase the best and brightest achievements in credit union marketing, advertising and communications.
And although the awards typically recognize the efforts of marketing staff, Dundas is quick to point out the shared nature of the hardware.
“Many of these awards are particularly rewarding to receive because they reflect our organizational excellence,” he says. “Since campaign results are a significant part of judging, the awards really recognize everyone’s efforts—including front-line staff.”
“It’s been exciting to see the synergy that’s resulted from our shared leadership structure,” says Ashok Gupta, Assistant Vice-President of Marketing at Envision.
Carol Rogalski, Assistant Vice-President of Marketing at First Calgary Savings couldn’t agree more.
“In the beginning, I think there were a lot of questions about how the new integrated structure would work,” she says. “Although there’s been a learning curve, I think we’re definitely beginning to see the benefits of working together, sharing ideas and leveraging our respective strengths.”
The specific awards won by the First Calgary Savings and Envision Financial marketing team were:

Surrey, B.C.—A new women’s shelter and health centre currently being constructed in Surrey by Atira Women’s Resource Society has received a major lift thanks to the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation.
With a recent $10,000 donation, the Envision Foundation is helping bring Atira one step closer to completing its Maxxine Wright Place facility, scheduled to open in October of 2008. The centre will provide comprehensive care and support to at-risk mothers in danger of harming their fetuses and/or young children due to their experiences of violence and abuse, unstable living conditions, mental health issues, and/or struggles with substance use.
The $14 million facility will include two buildings. One building will serve as a 12-bed shelter for women who are homeless and pregnant, complete with a community health centre and a daycare. The second will be a 24-bed shelter with second-stage transition housing.
Atira, in partnership with The Fraser Health Authority and the Ministry of Child and Family Development, currently serves a client list of 195 women through an interim health centre in central Surrey. The temporary facility has provided services for more than 300 women since it was opened in 2005.
Caithlin Scarpelli, Atira’s Resource Development Coordinator, says the new Maxxine Wright Place will meet a critical need in the community.
“Without the Maxxine Wright Place project, no such facility would exist in the area. The new centre will make a difference in the lives of the women who are facing issues like poverty, homelessness, addiction, lack of education, violence, exploitation, unplanned pregnancy, and lack of social support.”
“Women in need will use the new Maxxine Wright Place as a place for becoming healthy,” she says. “The centre will give new young mothers the empowerment and support to establish safe, positive living spaces for themselves and for their children.”
At Maxxine Wright Place, women who are at risk will have access to health care and social supports, including pre- and post-natal medical and nursing care, alcohol and drug counseling, safety planning, advocacy in getting housing, and other resources.
“Investing in the women is investing in a bright future for our children,” says Scarpelli.
The Maxxine Wright Place is modeled after the Sheway Project in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Opened in 1993, Sheway has been recognized by the Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health for achieving significant results in improving the lives of at-risk women in the community.
In addition to Maxxine Wright Place, Atira operates housing and related resource programs in White Rock, South Surrey, Newton.
“In leading the Maxxine Wright Place project, Atira is working to build healthier communities,” says Sally O’Sullivan, Chair of the Envision Charitable Foundation. “We’re delighted to make this donation to such a worthwhile initiative that will improve the quality of life for so many women and their children.”

Abbotsford, B.C.—An Abbotsford resident with expertise in investing has been declared Canada’s 2008 winner of the National Young Leaders Award, presented annually by the Credit Union Central of Canada (CUCC).
Thirty-five year-old David Lanphear of local credit union Envision Financial recently received the award and an accompanying $10,000 scholarship while in Ottawa at the National Conference of Credit Union Executives. The award recognizes the outstanding business skill and contribution of young leaders in Canada’s credit union system.
Lanphear was selected as the winner from among several nominees from across the country. After being chosen as one of five finalists, he underwent a rigourous review process involving a presentation on leadership in financial services to an 85-person judging panel.
“Being recognized like this is an incredible honour,” says Lanphear, who is currently Envision’s Assistant Vice-President, Investment Services. “It wasn’t something I was expecting but I’m certainly grateful for it.”
“This award recognizes David’s leadership and achievements,” says Envision Financial President and CEO Gord Huston. “He’s an extremely deserving recipient—all of us at Envision are thrilled that he won, and I think that the entire community of Abbotsford should be proud of him.”
Lanphear joined Envision about 10 years ago, after graduating from the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) and completing a brief stint with a large bank. He began studying criminology, but couldn’t shake an underlying and ever-increasing attraction to investing.
“I’ve always been interested in the world of investment—even as a young person,” he says. “It was a natural career path for me and I think it was the right decision to pursue it full-time—especially in roles that have enabled me to help others with their investing goals.”
Lanphear moved rapidly through the ranks at Envision, taking on positions of increasing responsibility before eventually assuming his current AVP role.
Under his leadership, Envision’s Investment Services subsidiary grew its net income by a staggering 492% between 2005 and 2007.
However, Lanphear is quick to deflect adulations to the individuals who he says made his achievements possible. “Receiving the award has been humbling,” he says. “There are so many people that deserve credit and thanks, especially the senior leaders at Envision who have given me opportunities and have provided such tremendous support.”
"Envision’s Investment Services team is absolutely stellar and deserves credit for what we’ve accomplished in these past few years," says Lanphear. "We’re looking ahead enthusiastically. The people on this team are the best in the business."
“My wife has also been an incredible support to me,” he adds. “It came as a surprise to me when my name was announced as the winner, and I was glad to share the moment with her.”
The family man and father says he’d like to use the $10,000 scholarship towards a master’s degree in business.

Chilliwack, B.C.—To the naked eye it looks a typical bank or credit union building, but to the Green Building Council, Envision Financial’s Chilliwack City branch is an award-worthy masterpiece of “green” design.
The Green Building Council recently awarded Envision’s location at 45840 Cheam Avenue with Leadership In Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) “Silver” status, recognizing the building for its environmentally-responsible structure and construction.
“It’s always an honour to be publicly acknowledged for efforts like this and we’re very proud of the LEED certification,” says Ruth Maccan, Branch Manager. “Our organization is striving to be a leader in corporate citizenship, and that involves being a good steward of the environment.”
Constructed in late 2006 to specific environmentally-friendly architectural specifications, the building is loaded with green features.
Interior light in the credit union branch comes primarily from the sun—a spacious atrium features 360-degree natural light, with windows strategically placed to minimize the need for artificial lighting. In areas that natural light does not penetrate, energy-efficient light fixtures are used.
The building’s heating system is specially zoned for different parts of the building, so that energy can be conserved in areas that receive natural heat gain from the sun.
Low-emission paints cover the walls and ceilings, significantly lessening the amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that would be outgassed by conventional paints. Low-flow faucets and dual-flush toilets are used in the restrooms to conserve water. And much of the furniture, carpeting, and upholstery contains post-product recycled materials.
Even the construction process itself followed rigorous environmental standards, says Maccan. “The contractors separated out all the recyclable excess materials, in order to reduce the amount of scrap materials going into landfill.”
“If you begin your design with LEED in mind, the added costs for opting to go green are minimal,” she says. “Environmentally-friendly buildings like this one use much less energy and minimize water consumption, so we stand to save on long-term electrical and water costs.”
Maccan points out that an environmentally-responsible building also provides a better work environment for employees.
To offset the energy that the Chilliwack City branch building uses, Envision has purchased Green Power Certificates from B.C. Hydro. In fact, the company is currently in the process of purchasing enough Green Power Certificates to offset the energy needs of its entire operation which includes 21 credit union branches across the province and five subsidiary businesses.
“Utilizing green power and constructing environmentally-friendly buildings are tactics that are becoming more and more important to Envision as we seek out new ways to take better care of the planet,” says Gord Huston, Envision Financial President and CEO.
The Chilliwack City branch isn’t Envision’s first building to earn LEED status. In 2005, Envision’s Willoughby branch in Langley became LEED-certified, making Envision the first financial institution in Canada to achieve a LEED recognition from the U.S. Green Building Council (the fledgling Canada Green Building Council did not have a Tenant Improvement LEED program at the time).
Likewise, Envision’s recently-built Vintage Hills Branch in the Okanagan has achieved LEED status. Envision’s newly-constructed branches in Maple Ridge and Newton (Surrey) are currently under review by the Green Building Council, and are expected to be awarded LEED certification as well.
“We’ve made a commitment to build all new Envision buildings to environmentally-friendly standards,” says Huston. “It’s the right thing to do.”

Under her leadership, our sales force has strengthened, we have experienced rapid growth in our retail and business banking book, and our member-owner satisfaction has increased.”
In her nearly 10 years with Envision, Bev has provided leadership to many areas of the organization as Senior Vice-President, Sales and Service. Before joining Envision Financial in 1999, Bev worked with chartered banks and held numerous senior positions in the financial services industry. Bev holds an MBA from Dalhousie University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers. She is a graduate of the Stanford Executive Program specializing in strategy and also of the Leadership Vancouver program.
“This is an excellent opportunity to advance Envision’s vision, and I’m extremely confident in my team,” says Brown. “The Chief Operating Officer role enables me to focus on implementing Envision’s strategic plan of advocacy for member-owners and providing unsurpassed value in financial services to British Columbians.”

In addition, Bev is a past board member of Pacific Riding for Disabled and of Ethical Funds, Canada’s first and largest family of socially responsible mutual funds. Bev resides in Abbotsford, B.C. with her husband Ed and their two teenage children Devon and Odell.
In a similar move, Envision’s partner First Calgary Savings has named Paul Kelly as its COO. These leadership changes reflect of the unique nature of the partnership between the two credit unions, the aim of which is to create success within local markets while creating a network of independent financial institutions across Canada. Having locally-focused COOs will enable the public-facing areas of each organization to focus on local strategies that reflect the uniqueness of each market.

Maple Ridge, B.C.—Maple Ridge resident Brad Senner didn’t expect to receive a 42-inch high definition television from a local credit union, of all places. But that’s exactly what happened—Senner was one of 16 individuals to win a prize at the grand opening celebration of Envision’s Ridge Meadows branch in Maple Ridge.
Senner’s name was drawn to receive a home entertainment system, complete with the TV and a surround sound system.

Vancouver, B.C.—Thanks to the generous support of donors like the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation, the Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of BC recently launched CHOICES 2: Reaching Out, an innovative youth suicide prevention film and program.
Created for students, school counselors and other youth service professionals, CHOICES 2: Reaching Out offers a comprehensive film and workshop package that is based on current evidence research, and is available in both stand-alone and trainer-accompanied format.
As an evolution of the Crisis Centre’s award-winning youth suicide prevention video CHOICES, CHOICES 2: Reaching Out is the next generation of classroom educational tool to help prepare youth to reach out for help and to help their friends overcome suicidal feelings.
The new DVD and workshop series is designed to address the relationship between these life challenges, youth mental health, and suicidality. The film encourages youth to talk to a trusted adult, school counselor or coach about suicide or other difficulties in their lives.
“Far too often, friends, family, and teachers do not recognize the warning signs from a suicidal youth until it’s too late”, says Kaman Ng, Director of Development & Communications, of the Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of BC. “In today’s complex society, youth are struggling with life challenges such as bullying, relationship conflict with family and friends, abuse, sexuality concerns, cultural integration, self-harm issues, and substance abuse. Distressed youth are often unable to cope with their emotional pain—many see ending their lives as the only way out.”
The CHOICES 2: Reaching Out film tells the story of a successful intervention by a 17-year old student whose best friend is contemplating suicide. The dramatization is interwoven with stories shared by young adults who were touched by suicide during their own high school years. Youth audiences will hear from their peers that suicide is not about death, but rather about stopping psychological pain. All viewers will hear that many suicides are preventable and how they can play important roles in preventing the suicide of someone they know.
The 21-minute CHOICES 2: Reaching Out suicide prevention video will be used in interactive youth suicide prevention workshops impacting more than 10,000 high school students across the Lower Mainland and the sea-to-sky corridor. In addition, the DVD and training package will be available to schools and social service agencies across BC and locations around the world. With an estimated audience of 300,000, CHOICES 2: Reaching Out is poised to become a mainstay of youth suicide-prevention resources.
“The Envision Charitable Foundation is delighted to join a number of other organizations to support this valuable and effective suicide prevention tool,” says Seline Kutan, Executive Director of the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation.
The Envision Foundation contributed $6,810 to the project. Other donors to the CHOICES 2: Reaching Out project include the CKNW Orphan’s Fund, North Growth Foundation, John Hardie Mitchell Family Foundation, TELUS, Vancouver Police Department Foundation, Canadian Bridge Federation, Wolridge Foundation, and the Province of British Columbia.

Langley, B.C.—Envision Financial has experienced an incident of internal fraud which was discovered through our financial audit process. At this point, we have determined that the amount of the fraud is approximately $1 million. Envision carries an insurance policy for instances such as this—the usual coverage is 90 per cent. This matter has been reported to our insurer and the appropriate police authorities, and we anticipate that the loss to our organization will be limited. This activity did not affect our member-owners’ funds.
Our intensive investigation, led by senior management and involving internal and external auditors, indicates that a single employee, whose employment has since been terminated, perpetrated the fraud. We are limited in what we can say about this employee as there is investigation underway. She was a mid-level manager at our head office and served with us for 11 years. She was in a position of trust and authority and her actions went against our core values—honesty, integrity and trust.
Fraud is an ever-evolving issue in the financial services industry—it’s impossible to prevent all fraud. But that’s why we put controls in place and conduct ongoing reviews and improvement of those controls. Some are preventative and others are for detection—like our financial audit process which identified this fraud. That’s also why we carry insurance to minimize the impact of any losses.
As with any incident of this nature, a full review of our procedures and controls is being undertaken by Envision management, auditors, and independent third-parties, including forensic auditors.

Using the medium of art and/or play therapy, the children can safely express their feelings of grief, sadness and even anger.
With a contribution of $2,500, the Envision Foundation has provided vital funding for the program. The Children’s Art Therapy Program depends on support from the community.
“Through this program, children and teens work with a qualified counsellor using art, play, storytelling, and ritual to express feelings and concerns that are sometimes difficult to put into words,” says Gilly Heaps, a Delta Hospice Society Counsellor.
“Most of the children in the program are losing or have lost a loved one. Art therapy helps them understand their feelings,” she says. “It also teaches parents how to support their children in these difficult life circumstances.”
Heaps says that as many as 65 children benefit from the Children’s Art Therapy Program every year.
“The program benefits the entire community of Delta,” she says. “When a child or teen learns healthy ways of managing pain and loss, it helps them to better understand and therefore avoid inappropriate expressions of feelings like mischief, misdemeanor, and other behaviour that could be dangerous to the child or to others.”
“It’s an honour to be able to contribute to a worthy organization like the Delta Hospice Society,” says Seline Kutan, Executive Director of the Envision Foundation. “The Children’s Art Therapy Program meets an important need in the community.”
In July of 2007, the Society announced that they had received a signed letter of intent from Fraser Health to lease 1.3 acres of land in Ladner, BC to build Delta’s first in-patient hospice residence and supportive care centre. The supportive care centre will house the society’s programs and services including the Children’s Art Therapy Program. The Delta Hospice Society has undertaken a Capital Campaign to fund the design and construction of the much needed hospice residence and support centre, which will serve people not only from Delta and Vancouver but from communities throughout British Columbia. Delta Hospice Society clients frequently have family in other communities, and support is provided for family members who have a loved one who is dying in another community.

Maple Ridge, B.C.—The Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation has donated $5000 to assist in the purchase of a new Bladder Scanner for Gardenview Pavilion, the sub-acute unit at Ridge Meadows Hospital (RMH).
The Bladder Scanner is one of several instruments needed at RMH, and it is also identified as a high priority for Gardenview Manor, the 25 bed transitional care unit. Bladder scanners are used to evaluate bladder volume in patients who experience dramatic decreases in urine output over 6 to 8 hours before catheterization is necessary. The Bladder Scanner serves to reduce patient discomfort and to preserve patient wellbeing.
“With the new bladder scanner, the incidence of UTI (urinary tract infection) and the number of catheterizations will be reduced,” says Sandra Rankin, Executive Director of the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. “We are very grateful to Envision Financial for choosing to support RMH and to ensure care and comfort of our patients.”
“This Bladder Scanner will enable the Ridge Meadows Hospital to provide even better care to residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows,” says Seline Kutan, Executive Director of the Envision Charitable Foundation. “The Envision Charitable Foundation is proud to support organizations like the RMH Foundation who are working diligently to better the lives of the people living in our communities.”

White Rock, B.C.—The Peace Arch hospital has added a new neuro chair to its arsenal of cutting-edge medical equipment thanks to a $5,000 donation from the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation.
The Transcend TMM4 Series Neuro Chair fulfills a need much more fundamental than its technologically impressive sci-fi name suggests: it provides a highly adjustable surface on which patients can receive individualized treatment and rehabilitation. With a maximum weight capacity of 500 pounds and motorized controls for smooth operation, the neuro chair is used primarily in caring for victims of stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA).
“Stroke and TIA patients will benefit greatly from the availability of the neuro chair,” says Selina Yano, Senior Development Officer at the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation. “Hospital staff will benefit from an easier and safer way to move Stroke and TIA patients, and our community will benefit from having access to Stroke and TIA treatment that meets provincial protocols close to home.”
The neuro chair will help meet the Peace Arch hospital’s growing patient demands. In 2007, the Peace Arch hospital received approximately 30,000 patients—High population growth and new home construction in the community are bringing thousands of new residents into the hospital’s traditional service area every year.
“Envision is delighted to help promote enhanced health care services in the White Rock and South Surrey area through this grant,” says Seline Kutan, Executive Director of the Envision Charitable Foundation. “The neuro chair will increase the quality of life for many local area residents now and in years to come.”

Chilliwack, B.C.—On February 17, Chilliwack resident Robin Goetz will board a plane at Abbotsford International Airport with a suitcase full of short-sleeve shirts, sandals and other warm-weather clothing. But unlike many other people this time of year, she won’t be flying to Hawaii, Mexico or even Palm Springs. Instead, she’ll be heading to Ghana, West Africa—via Toronto—to participate in a credit union coaching tour with the Canadian Cooperative Association (CCA).
“I’m really excited,” says Goetz, Assistant Branch Manager at Envision Financial’s Town Centre branch. “In Africa, there aren’t a lot of women in leadership positions. I want to show women over there that it can be done.”
While in Ghana, Goetz anticipates being called upon to provide advice and technical assistance on a number of other topics including credit union management, the loan cycle, delinquency management, marketing, and even HR procedures and policies. Goetz will spend more than three weeks in Africa before returning to Abbotsford on March 11.
Joining Goetz on the trip will be nine other leaders from credit unions across Canada—each of whom went through a competitive application and interview process before being selected to participate. Like Goetz, most have years of credit union experience under their belt and a passion to share that knowledge in the developing world.
“My husband and I have traveled quite a bit and we have seen a lot of poverty,” says Goetz. “I’ve always wanted to do something in response, so when this opportunity came along, I decided to go for it.”
But Goetz is quick to point out that Envision’s Barry Delaney, Senior Vice-President, Planning, was also a key factor in her decision to apply.
“Barry has been to Africa on two coaching trips in recent years, and the stories he’s told when he’s returned have been just amazing,” says Goetz.
“Some organizations arrive in Africa with a bag full of money,” says Delaney. “They come in and lend to people until that money runs out. It’s a great gesture, but it’s not really sustainable. What CCA does is arrive with advice. They teach people to solve their own problems, and provide leadership skills and training. It’s the difference between giving people a fish, and teaching people to fish, I guess. CCA shows people how to use their own savings to change their communities. It’s a fundamentally different approach to microfinance.”
During his time in Ghana last year, Delaney remembers seeing a man walking down the street carrying a sewing machine on his head. Intrigued, he decided to engage him in conversation.
As Delaney suspected, it turned the man was indeed a member of the local credit union—and the sewing machine he was carrying had been purchased through a $30 microloan.
“He went on to tell me how that one $30 loan had changed his life,” says Delaney. “With the sewing machine, he was now able to provide for his family and earn a living going door to door doing garment repairs. Joining the credit union hadn’t just improved his life in a small way; it catapulted him to middle class status. Because of that loan, he was able to buy a house, send his kids to school and pay for medical treatments. He has self esteem and can contribute to his community.”
Although it’s been almost a full year since Delaney returned home from Africa, he says he still keeps in contact with the people he’s met on his travels.
“I get lots of e-mails asking for advice and input on various issues,” he says. “Sometimes I’m able to send them training materials and resources, and sometimes we just dialogue.”
The most recent e-mails have asked when Goetz and the next team of Canadians will arrive.
“Envision is such a successful credit union by any standard that we have an obligation to give back,” says Delaney. “Participating in these trips reminds me about our credit union roots—helping families. There’s no question that poverty is a complex problem requiring a multi-faceted solution. Helping create sustainable credit unions in the third world, who then provide these needed microloans, is a small step in breaking the cycle of poverty.”

Delta, B.C.—“CEO of a financial institution at age 11.” It’s an impressive claim to put on a resume, and one that will soon be possible for a student at Cougar Canyon Elementary School (CCES). That’s because this coming Thursday, a new credit union is coming to the Delta area—operated entirely by grade six students. “Voom Credit Union” will be launched by the students of CCES as a hands-on business education tool. The kids’ credit union is made possible through a partnership with local credit union Envision Financial.
On Thursday, January 24, 2008, the students and staff of CCES will be joined by Delta Mayor Lois Jackson, Delta School District Superintendent Steve Cardwell, Envision Financial President and CEO Gord Huston, and others to celebrate Voom’s grand opening and ribbon-cutting.
Voom will teach CCES’ students about financial responsibility, wise money-management, member-ownership, and community investment. Every two weeks, the school will hold a “credit union day” where all 492 students at CCES will be able to make deposits into their own credit union accounts. With the help of Envision staff, 21 students selected from CCES’ grade six classes will manage Voom by themselves as they perform the duties of tellers, cash desk workers, marketers, board members, branch managers, and CEOs. And in true credit union fashion, the students will be given an opportunity to decide how to spend an Envision-sponsored two-thousand dollar donation to the school at the end of each year.

Coquitlam, B.C.—The Eagle Ridge Hospital has acquired a new cytoscope thanks to the help of generous community donors, including the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation which recently donated $5,000 for the purchase of the unit.
“This new video cytoscopy unit replaces old, worn out equipment,” says Heather Scott, Senior Development Officer for the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation. “Urologists use the cytoscope to repair lesions, take biopsies, crush stones in the urinary tract, and perform prostate surgeries.”
Scott says that 1,760 cytoscopies are performed every year at Eagle Ridge Hospital. With a steadily aging population in the Tri-Cities, she expects the demand to increase.
“Clearly this is an important and critical piece of equipment,” Scott says, adding that the cytoscope had been identified as one of 25 most essential pieces of equipment to be purchased for the hospital in the past year. “This particular cytoscope will perform up to 3,000 surgeries in its lifetime.”
“A well-equipped hospital is necessary for a strong, healthy, and vital community,” she says. “The cytoscope, in most cases, eliminates the need for more extensive and traumatic surgery—it’s a basic tool that will help people return to their normal daily lives so that they can be productive contributors to our community.”
“The aim of the Envision Charitable Foundation is to support initiatives that enhance the quality of life in Envision’s communities,” says Seline Kutan, Executive Director of the Envision Charitable Foundation. “We’re proud to be able support the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation and contribute to the purchase of new equipment that will benefit so many individuals in the Tri-Cities.”
